Lightbulb Inexpensive GPS logging for IRS records.

Even if you keep track of your trips / miliage the IRS wants a log if they asks for it.
    I got tagged once for $800 because I couldn't produce a log.
    -------
I bought a couple of Travel Eyes II units ($330 each) only to find out they only hold 30 hrs of data and there is no way to aggregate the data into a search able searchable / printable data base.
    ---------
Well this year I lucked out.
I was searching up on ebay and found the TECNET GPS Tracking Logger.
    Model TTL-1000 price $145.00.
Little square box, sits on dash plugs into cigarette lighter and has a SD card that stores 6 months of trips. (You can move it from vehicle to vehicle if you want to take mama's car on a business trip.)
Pull the card out dump it to a hard drive on your computer and keep on trippen.
SD card contains has their management software for kicking out custom reports and it uses Google Earth to show a line where you went if you need it.
Great Bang for the Buck and it will keep you straight with the feds.
    ---------
PS My two units have already paid for themselves because I forgot to charge a whole days work out to a customer and the logger showed me where I was on that day and how long I spent on the job.
    ----------
    Hope this helps someone.!
    Dave

There are Android apps for similar tracking, but my HTC Wildfire gets dried out prety fast. I am going to install Ligther to USB port in my car so I can recharge it as necessary.

    Thanks Dave

Does it have a usb that connects to a laptop to run in conjunction with google earth or streets and trips?
Or do you have to remove the card from the unit and slide it into a laptop to get historical data?
I've been thinking about something like this for some time.
Just haven't had the time to explore.

No real time display it will not act as a TOM TOM or Garmine Nuvi or such.
This is just a stand alone logger. all reports / graphs are processed post mortum (Tripum?)
They do provide a little thumb drive SD to USB reader to plug the SD into your off loading computer.
Also I little round puck to stick on the dash that has a metallic disk on top that the magnet in the unit sits on.
    --------
I actually got my wife to re evaluate if some trips in her car were really worth making.
In the report generator there is a place for fuel cost per gallon.
It kicks out a report of what it cost to make a selected run.
I think it went like this. " I spent $6.34 cents to save a couple of bucks on groceries? From now on you will eat what I bring home from the local market."
Really slick little package especially for the price you found them for.
    ----------
For on the road I use a little Delorme Earth Mate USB engine module with Streets and Trips or 3D Topo Quads.
I have a fixed computer in the big truck and it runs all the time My pickup and pleasure vehicle we use that setup on a laptop.
It talks to you and you can talk to it.
The logger now just does it's own thing.

I was listening to a radio program talking about the issue of logs and the advice was to printout the logs on a monthly basis and sign them before a notary who will then seal the documents. That keeps the IRS from saying "well you just went home and created the documents".

Wow. More and more birocracy in US. I can see the mandatory realtime tracking via GPS of all company vehicles by the government within 5 years, so "one can not forge is movement logs and all citizents within 10 years, "for your own safety".
And for non-believers, 10 years ago I was in minority when I profesed that new democratic government in my country will just make things worse then before all of the bombings. Now, I am not able to find someone that will confess that they voted for them. I hope I will be wrong, but I said the same thing in 2000th.
