Default 3com 905c's crawl to a halt when router goes "live"

I just went live with my staros router with the following specs
    1133 MHz
1024 meg ram (alot i know, its for bgp routes later)
    2 x 3com 905c Cyclone's

As soon as it went live, the machine crawled to a halt, mavigating menu's was painfully slow, and there was significant packet loss.
Does anyone know of a compatibility issue with these nics?
I did move these 2 nics into another linux machine (2.4.20-20.9) for testing, and cannot reproduce any problem. I have pushed them both to almost 100mbit/sec sustained (send and receive) with no problems whatsoever... this is the dmesg output from the second linux machine.
