I just bought some Star Os AP's with 2 wireless cards and 2 ethernet ports.
I'm using one wireless card to feed the unit as a client and the other as the an AP for the micro pop. The two ethernet adapters are for the customer and for us to service the unit.
The ethernet ports when we do a speed test give us about 3.5 megs back to our core router or about 1 meg to an internet speed test which is normal.
Problem is the when I connect using a wireless card in my notebook to the ap card, The best I'm seeing is about 1 meg back to my core router and a lot of times it comes back between 200-400kbits.
I'm using privates on the wan side and privates on the lan sides as well.
I was thinking maybe the 2 lucent cards with ther integrated diversity antennas were interfering with each other so I swapped the ap card with a prism antennaless short card, same thing.
Any ideas?
George

Interesting enough, I set up my 3rd box yesterday afternoon and got diferent results. This time I placed the wan card in the bottom pci slot and the ap card in the top and got the throughput I was expecting.
I also assigned this box a public IP addy rather than a private one. Not sure what makes the diference, but I figured enough people have looked at this message that I should give back a report on my findings.
I'll have to go back to the other boxes and dig in and see what other diferences we have that might have made them go slower.

Look at your dmesg log (Advanced pull down menu) and see if your wireless card is sharing a IRQ with another device. If it is I would think this is the problem. It was discussed in another thread but I can't find it now.

I think quite a few other people on this list would like to have more visibility of performance issues and how best to tune their configs, but unfortunately getting this info has proved difficult.

However that has now changed, the last drop of the product 1.12.1 has a performance testing dialog in it. I have been using it today & it is incredibly useful and makes identifying and removing bottle necks easy.

For your specific question to get an _accurate_ speed test, install 1.12.1 on your AP, and connect from your laptop. You then run the starutil tool on your laptop

starutil15 ip-address password -rx

or

starutil15 ip-address password -tx

I am getting 510 KB (4 Mbits) from my laptop to an 11Mb Orinoco in a 4521 Soekris

At 5.5 Mb, I get 397 KB of data through
At 2 Mb I get 185 KB
At 1 Mb I get 96 KB

Now we have a way of precisely measuring performance, performance tuning could be useful chapter in the new manual. I know I am delighted with this new facility.
