Hello
I have most ip's qshaped at the moment but I would like to restrict KAZAA
and other similar type programs on the existing qshaped ip's from chewing up upload bandwidth but still permit some to get through (56k) each.. as a example.
What would be the best way and a example would be appreciated... Thanks
PS Server is working great :)

What is the limit you have set for your users and what do you have for a feed (T1, T3, etc)?
is there a way to set up just a default pipe/bw limit for any 1 ip that the dhcp will give out? eg. I want any IP in network 192.168.1.0(or maybe range 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.50) to have its own pipe and bw cap, so that I don't have to go in and configure every one, only the ones that I want to change from the default setting. Also is there a way to limit the bw only on a certain port/ip combination?.
something like
qshape default default_pipe_number bw 768 128 192.168.1.0 on $client
I think I see a way to make a default pipe, but then all ip's would be in that pipe and would be fighting for the 768/128 bw, and I want them all to have the separate b/w pipes.

Also.. Lets say I have a t-1 in ether1 with a backup 1.5mpbs dsl in ether2, is there a way to have it fall back on the dsl if the t-1 dies, or bring it active during peak hours)(eg. 5pm - 9pm only) so the dsl provider doesn't complain?
thnx, daniel.

The default is something that has been requested and it is a good idea. Not sure when it will happen, but it is on the list.
As for the T1/DSL auto switch, this would be something we are going to do as well. I expect by this time next year we will have 3 sources of bandwidth and I will be wanting to do this as well.

Hi Lonnie
I have most users set at 1.5mb up and down.
I have 2 - 5 Meg down/640 up DSL Pipes thus the reason to restrict the up.

So you are not controlling the upload speed at all. If you have 640K you have to limit to less than that. Try 256K to begin with. You have to be brutal on guys sending.

I was hoping to leave the customers with 1.5 up and down for most ports but somehow restrict the speed for a selection of ports ie: port 1214 can have 1.5 down but restrict that port to 56k up.
It would be nice to have a global filter for a entire class c to restrict certian ports for all... I would think the shape command would do this.
I would assume that I could just firewall port 1214 but that would restrict downloads as well :?:

If you have 640K upload on your DSL - YOU HAVE TO SET A LIMIT THAT IS LOWER OR YOU ARE NOT LIMITED AT ALL.
Sorry for the CAPS, but this point has to be made. Setting a limit on your user of 1.5 mbps will allow a single user to shut you down since your available bandwidth is only 640 kbps. You have to set each user to some lower figure like 256 kbps.
The shaper will do a whole subnet and port ie 10.10.10.0/24 1214, but you still have to limit the users general traffic or you are dead. It doesn't matter how your bandwidth is consumed, the fact that it is used up is what you have to guard against.
