It was an easy swap. Previously we had 2 freeBSD machines on our main hilltop. One BSD machine had 3 aironet 352 pci cards running backhauls; the T-1 to our office, and the backhauls to our other towers. Then the other BSD machine had our APs for that tower... orinoco silver cards running wi driver. You may or may not be aware that the wi driver doesn't have a AP mode, so we were running in a psuedo mode where our clients would show a peer-to-peer mode. Anyways all I did was go up there at midnight, swap out that cpu for the new star-OS machine, plugged in the crossover cable to the aironet BSD backhaul machine, and turned it on... immediately after I logged in I saw that our clients were associating. The customers' orinoco client manager automatically switched from peer-to-peer to AP mode, and before I left for the hilltop I logged into each WET11 customer and switched them from adhoc to infrastructure mode and set the AP density to low.
So far so good! Getting our 2 other hilltop Cpus ready for swapout as we speak. Later this week I am going to log in and hide the network name of our towers and might enable some 64bit WEP for performance testing and start my association list.
Thanks guys!
