This is a closed first beta of the new driver. It ran overnight but still too many issues to release, so it will be another 30 days.

There are a few more things to work out and then it is time for a public beta release. No timing but it will be sooner than 30 days. Way sooner.

There were some rate control issues with SR9, so a new closed beta was released today. It will get tested and if all goes well with the new rate control stuff, it'll become a public beta after a few days of no meltdown.

Just a word of warning that this release still does not have QOS. It is a very early beta. I would call our own use the alpha testing phase.

Ok, here's a quick update for those who have had the itchy trigger finger on the PM button.

The new beta is working very nicely thus far but the testing time has been very short. I've upgraded a mix of platforms and a mix of 2.4GHz and 900MHz units, so far so good with signals being at least as good as with 2811, better for the most part but not worse at all, rates are golden as they are way up.

All in all this next beta will be great and will hopefully hit the files site within the next couple of days providing there isn't a show stopper in the meantime.

More simple straightforward advice from me today:
Just don't use WDS for your PtMP AP customers...

Don't use WDS, cap your PtMP AP clients at 200k-500k upstream.

I think lads lets just wait for the new release.

It seems the crux of all the issues has been the removal of the software retry mechanism. A decision I believe to have been made by Atheros. If the guys have figured out a way to get it back in or a work around (without having to resort to VDS for a retry mechanism).

It is not microsoft we are dealing with here where we know we can give out in advance of a software release and how rubbish it is going to be, because we know their release is going to be rubbish and "dont use until at least SP2!" :)

Or at least 6+ months in use. HEHEHE.

Possibly, but no other atheros based driver we have used seems to exhibit this behavior.

Nevertheless, still just waiting and hoping.

Nah, when you write an Atheros driver you either write a software tx chain or you don't and you just let the hardware handle it.

I announced it was in closed testing and that it would be released when it had run for several days with no urge to downgrade. I have not released it yet, so it means it is not ready for you guys yet.

The problem is the answer you got was obvious. The one that would have been nice would have had some additional insights as to the timeframe.

Over the last month I have been forced to start switching the sites where we have the most trouble. The replacement is working, but I still prefer to stay with Star-OS for several reasons not the least of which is losing olsrd and having to go back to ospf. Its just getting harder to do that since they are predicting snow here this weekend and I am running out of time to make decisions before the weather makes things much more difficult.

As some of these folks are very hard pressed for some solution to their individual problems and time being a real challenge for some..
I am sure you folks know by now the sticky problems that are holding up the release.
If those final problems are not earth shattering, they might not even be a concern for these people.
Only you would know.
Possibly it would be to a mutual advantage to offer the closed beta for them to test at their own risk and obtain their feedback.
Just a fleeting thought!:)

You betcha!
I meant if it were down to a few loose frog hairs dangling around or something cosmetic.
We know what perfectionist these guys are.;)
They don't ever want to be caught up in the reputation of releasing crap!
OOps!, Guess I just shot down my own idea for the obvious reasons.
Sorry guys, I was just beginning to feel your pain.

I will now relinquish this thread for "word from the Great Pumpkin"

Sorry for not providing more information and a time frame in which we will resolve the issues we are facing.

We have hit some snags and the new release will be ready in about 30 days.

Sounds like this is a very real challenge and that can be tough on developers.
All tho this is very serious for some users I have to admit.
This exchange is beginning to tickle my funny bone.

We have weekly engineering meetings to cover things that haven't be completed. Whenever management ask when a project will be completed, we have adopted a standard phrase "2 weeks".
So I get it, "Are we there yet?";)

"Almost there it's over the next hill."
"Now sit back and read the Berma Shave signs."
Here's one now "
There once was a man named Mc Ajax, jacked his car up on two bumper jacks, while under it snug, on a wrench he did tug, now his widow is wearing his slacks!

Thanks Daddy!

Do you remember the movie "Money Pit" and the contractors standard reply as to when the job will be finished?

Maybe that is why one of our guys first said 2 weeks and it got such a laugh!
Then the next meeting it was 2 weeks and the meeting after that etc. etc. etc.
Thanks for the funny memory,
