I'm curious if anyone has used a tree as a repeater, how it went, possible issues, ideas, getting over the embarassment, etc.

I've got a 'R'emote site, that I don't want to put a tower up for, and the trees are ridiculous, thought of just attaching a small bracket somewhere 60ft+, thinking about wind effecting a backhaul alignment, climbing issues, otherwise it would work I think...

Giggled about it at first, but now I'm actually considering it, am I losing it?

On a couple occasions I've mounted in a tree at the customer end, but not as an ap,

There's a guy down the southern part of Oregon burried on the tall doug firs who mounts trango's in trees. He has to or he could not install many people.

He has a tree climber that works well with him. Reason we don't consider trees is we have to wait before we could get somebody up a tree and we can never have that.

We've used trees for quickie replacements and what-if installs. Take a nice fir and trim the branches to make a climbing ladder and try and top it where it gets skinny. A trimmed tree like that will not sway very much and is easy to climb. It is easy to attach gear with wood screws but grounding is not so good.

Done right it can get you a good tower for 5 years.

Tree’s can certainly be your friends! I use many tree based AP's and about 50% or greater of my clients have their units mounted in tree's. Our of hundreds of tree installs, I have only ever had to go back to two of them because of a wire staple that got pounded a little to hard into the tree when the climber came down, or the client munched the wire.

...or the client munched the wire.

Was the client a squirrel?

If so, this could be a new previously untapped market for us.

See this thread (http://forums.star-os.com/showthread.php?p=43606&highlight=tree#post43606)from last year where luke541 talks more about his tree installs.

You bet it was a squirrel! I actually had this happen with this customer twice. Third time it was conduit. =) All the AP sites get conduit and cam's and I never see the squirrels on or near the equipment, but slowly see the bird tirds build up!

For instance in the link of a picture posted below, you'll see a house if your try Real hard! This 90 degree shot I have from one of my "tree towers" that has 73 clients within this 90 degree shot "not on one radio" following the highway you see. The AP tree is a Pine that's about 150' tall. With trimming etc and the wind break of the other close tree's, it hardly sways at all. I can actually see the sway on my ip cams and watch signals, and I have never worried.

In this pic, there is about 250 homes to target believe it or not. And all of them are right in front, not way out beyond the first hills. =)

Tree's have been very good to me, both on the client and even the AP side. And the cost?.... Usually trading internet service straight accross with the land owner. Can't beat that!

Some time back I said i'd post a picture of a one of my "Tree Towers". Here is one taken while reworking/upgrading a tree recently. Its a little messy half way into the job, but here you go!

Now thats what I call determination. Making use of what you have to work with.

Where in Oregon are you?
Seems theres quite a few Oregon wisps who use star.

Exactly what i'm sayin! This tree has been in service "hehe" for 4+ years and should it fail, there is another right next to it. Make's an easy backup plan say anything were to happen to my tower, eh tree... ;)

I'm down south and cover most of the southern oregon area. We only do residential for the GP and surrounding area, but have wide coverage thoughout most of S. Oregon. Just don't have enough crew right now to take on installs 50+ miles from the office... Gettin there!

Yea it seems there are a few of us Star Wisps in Oregon. Though I have never really tried alternatives other than Moto, it would take alot to get me to sway from Valemouont / StarOs. You CAN Not beat the price, performance and quality. :D

wow, that sure is industrious !

I'd love to live in a liberal (or sensible) country where people could go along to get along a bit more. In recent years here in Ireland everyone objects to everything and it seems business is the loser most of the time. It makes me very jealous to hear of some of you guys putting up your own towers and is this case taking over a tree to use as a POP..! In Ireland taking over a tree would no doubt lead to lifetime imprisonment and as for putting up your own tower - firing squad..:D

That's to bad its not that easy for you guys. We just look for that "just right" home on a hill that has a nice view, we knock on the door and say in a nutshell "would you like free high speed in trade for letting us put a thing "we'll call it" in yer tree?" It will get you high speed And help a few neighbors get high speed as well. And the response 95% of the time has been PLEASE do! Usually this is because Dialup or Satellite is the only option for these folks.

So out of about 40 pops I have about 15 or more in tree's! I'd say about 400 or more of our customers are covered by a Pine or Redwood tree. Oh and some backup tree backhauls.

They are all on Private land and we don't disclose to anyone where they are loacted. And in most situations the equipment is 100' up or more in the tree "that's already on a hill". Even the home owner can't see the equipment because of the branches going up the tree. So it works out well for Us and for Them as well. There is still a little bit of that People take care of People attitude down here in these parts of Orygun. Hope it lasts!
