Since we got a bit off topic with monitoring I though I would start another thread (Sorry, C.Davis)

I have been using PRTG, http://www.paessler.com for a while and it works fine for me, It costs about a dollar per Custom OID or system with standard OID's (note to VNC, use the standard OID's where possible) you just need SNMP for the bandwidth graphing. It also graphs pings, and Cisco's packet capture mechicnism, also it's own L7 graphing that I have not used yet. It has a built in Web server with user rights assignable, and runs on Windows for dummies like me :D

I didn't mean to offend, if it was taken that way. I just look to that particular thread for ideas and if it 'runs away' then focus is lost. The idea behind that thread was to collect ideas, you guys are the ones monitoring, configuring, etc. I simply wanted to give every chance for everyone to throw their hat in the ring which would result in happy campers.

It seems to me, at this point, that many of you have adopted or favored different types of monitoring tools, created scripts, etc. Please do let me know what it is that you like about these apps, or dislike about the same. These are important opinions that could have a very serious impact on whats coming.

I'll keep an eye on this thread too, I'm all up for ideas and I'd really like to know what everyone wants, likes, etc.

Well, I use Nagios. I like it because it can monitor pretty much anything (write you own script if you want.)

What I don't like about it of course like everybody else is how large and difficult the config for each host/service is. It takes a lot of typing to add a new host to be monitored, though one could mitigate that problem by using one of the PHP-based web interface config tools.
