What do you guys use for testing end to end throughput and latency from a clients machine? I would like to setup a page along the lines of the dslreports speedtest. I have Win2k3 and Linux servers it can run on.

I have a php based speedtest someone posted here years and years ago that I've since modified. I could gzip it and toss it up here if you want. It requires at least php4, and I don't think it's platform specific.

It's at http://www.oregonfast.net/speedtest.tar.gz
For what it looks like, you can goto http://www.oregonfast.net/speedtest/
I can't really help with specifics on how to set it up, but there is the original readme file in that package.
We use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ as a test after we have setup a new client.

Yea, we that one as well as use several others to test the actual speed to the internet. We use this one inside our network to try to isolate specific speed problems, make sure the connection works under a load, and to get a baseline of what kind of speeds they're likely to get from external test sites. Also, because it's a very minimalist page that doesn't use java/javascript or activex or anything it works well even on really really old machines.

We used to use both of the above. But we also wanted to measure upload for internal network. So we started using this one: http://www.net-track.ch/opensource/speedtest/
Then it stopped working, and I haven't had time to look into it.

How about a StarOS v3 running on a pentium 4 at the NOC. Use it for level 7 traffic shaping. And you could also use starutil to do a speed test back to it from your laptop at the client?

We use Iperf to a server in the NOC.

We like our customers to be able to run speedtests on their own (from a webpage) - it helps with tech support as well. And since we still have a ton of non-StarOS CPEs, a web-based test is the only thing that's compatible all around.

I found this the other day while researching the same topic
http://www.auditmypc.com/speedtest.asp
It's free and you really only need to allow for credit of the author. Also provide a link to their seemingly google adsense campaign. It seems to work pretty well also.
