View Full Version : 4 Port NIC card for v2 HELP!

I have an old BSD box in a village hall that feeds four separate departments with DHCP addresses.
It is time to replace the box as it is the very last BSD in the system.
I don't have any way to use a WRAP or WAR unless I give them a CISCO switch and I really want to "cheap out on this one". It pays the rent for a site.
I can use a VIA EPIA 5000 (fanless) or even a recycled C3 / 750 and put together a nice little replacement with the V2 product .
I looked up on Ebay and found these 4 port cards.
===============================================
ZNYX ZX346Q 10/100 Mbps 4 Port Quad Ethernet NIC
Bid at $35.00
--------------------------
ASOUND 4 ports Ethernet Router Switch PCI NIC AL500-P
$26.95 Bye It Now
---------------------------
HP A5506-60102 4 PORT 100BASE PCI NIC
75.00 Buy it now.
==================================================

I hate to buy any one of them and then find it will not work.
Just by chance has anyone used any of these or know where I can get the least expensive 4 port for this project.?

The Asounds are new and would be great if they would work.
Thanks guys, "Burrrr it sure don't feel like spring"

The one I would have recommended was (if memory serves) the RouterBoard 24. It was a 4 port 1/2 size PCI card based on the same national Ethernet chipset as the WRAP boards use thus assuring compatability. The entire 4 port card only consumed about 1.2Watts.

Here is the link to it even though it may net be available any more.

I has been replaced with a newer RouterBoard 44 which is based on the VIA VT6105M (Rhine III) chipset. I do not know for sure if it is compatible with Star-OS.

Here is the link to it so you can check it out too.

I have not used either of these yet myself.

The key thing is to find something that has a supported chipset on it.

There used to be lots of Intel based 2 port PCI cards floating around on ebay, maybe you could find 2 of them.

Good luck, and let us know when you find one that works.

I also recommend the routerboard 44. I think wisp-router.com has some. They work great. We use two in a central router (9 ethernet ports).

The Asound you're referring to is just a switch 4-port card. It is only recognized as 1 ethernet port. It'd be the same as having a single ethernet port with a 4 port switch plugged into it. The ZNYX and HP aren't like that, but I'm not sure if they work with StarOS.

Ya Whoo! Reed.
You bet I want / need it.
Name your fee...I want to get these folks out of the dark ages ASAP I have a hunch the CPU fan stopped as it is bobbing up and down like a cork.
Do you still have my address and do you have a PP account?

Thanks to you other folks also.
I did not want to waste any money on something that wouldn't work.

Yes I caught the switch function on the Asound card Nic, but only after I sent the post.
You are truly a great bunch of guys,
Now I can take care of a goffy situation and be done with it.

Weather note,
I have some top of building work to do but the dog gone wind won't stop blowing. Maybe a break later in the week.
Everyone stay well,
