I am using a 24V 1000ma power supply and 350Mhz Gell filled direct burial ethernet cable for my POE runs. I have looked on the forums but cannot find clear answer to how far I can run this kind of cable. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to run 175ft up a tower, will this work?

Thanks

That should be OK, depending on what radios and how many. We have lots of runs that are that long. POE complicates things a bit but ethernet should be able to go 100 meters if the connections are made properly.

I want to use WAR board with 4 radios. I have other WAR runs around 100 ft maybe more but with only 2 radios and one with 3. Thanks for the help.

That should work fine. It would not be too hard to run a test 200' cable and see what you get. I think it is better to know on the ground than to experiment in real life 175' up a tower.

Thanks everyone I will try a test cable.(not quite sure why I didn't think of that first, duh) I guess when I'm trying to cover all the bases sometimes forget to think of the easy solutions to my questions.

Any results?

I have a POE caluclator somewhere... still have to put it on our site.

Keep in mind on long runs, you have a greater chance of induced interference depending on what is on the tower with your or blasting through at the 100' mark etc. etc.

We have some nice CAT5e doubleshielded cable with a ground wire en-route. Nice stuff and all of our testing went well. We have a few runs in the 175' range pending in the next few months.

Finally, Might want to look at 1.5amp power supply depending on what board (2 or 4) you plan on using with which cards.

Thanks for your help guys. It works fine know and my tower is up and operational. I can cover my entire city and then some. And actually Lonnie on the whole test cable idea. That was an excellent idea but I never mentioned that I had already run the cable up the tower and had also mounted all the antennas and box, I just didn't want to seem like an idiot running everything up there without testing it first. The only power supply I had at the time was a 12Volt 1500ma and the board just kept rebooting. Once I switched the power supply everything went up great. Thanks guys for your help. And pm me about price on that cable anyways.

Thanks

Hi. What advice does anyone have for the longest possible run of power? I'm thinking of how far we can push 48v DC, and then convert it to 18 volt at the far end, or something like that.

We have occasion to place a tower on a farmer's land, but the closest power would be at the farmhouse, quite a ways away. I don't want to run 12v POE all the way, since that would limit how far away we can place the tower. I'm wanting to run 1/4 mile or more along the treeline, if that's possible. Thanx

You might want to try running some heay gauge electrical wire from a 30amp breaker at the farmhouse across the treeline to the bottom of the Tower. Install a heavy duty outdoor electrical enclosure and rewire the 30 amp into two 15amp plugs inside the enclosure and then run poe up the tower. You may want to contact an electrician to work out the exact details on what guage wire and so forth. But something to that affect should work. Or look into solar but that would be more exspensive.

i have made it 300 feet on a 4 port war with 1 card and a 24V power supply
