If I understand correctly, there will be no way to adjust the radio's by freq. it will all be channelized? Me and a few other hams are working on a project of implmenting wifi in our area but we are not allowed encrytion but by using a alternet freq. this would allow us to operate without every one connecting also we are under part 97 and would be only used by people running star os not every one in the county with a wifi card! please let me know if I understand right? thanks

You can set the radio by using the frequency or the channel. If I get it correctly, I think you want to be able to fine adjust the frequency. We do not have support for that and the frequencies can only be on the IEEE assigned channels.
Hotspot is probably the best way to have a reasonably open but controlled system. It will require someone to have a radius server and enter the MAC addresses or username/passwords for allowed users.

OK, I might just try to use a different county code to kinda hide it and turn the ssid off, There is a tough line with the fcc on passwords and stuff I am going to have to research it more.
Thanks,
About freqyuency/chanell: what if I do want to put ap on 158th channel? In staros there are supported 157 and next to it is 161th channel. Why it is not possible to select 158, 159 and 160th channel?

If you use ## for the country code perhaps you have more choice. I don't really know what the Ham bands cover but the ## covers the whole range that the Atheros can handle.

If you used a channel in between the standard assignments you would be creating interference for two standard channels and would be unseen by either of them. We decided that this feature could simply be abused and would lead to further pollution of the spectrum.
Ok thanks for the answer, but there are stil 2 factors there:
1) other devices often supports full channel range, so they can cause interference to us and we can have limited posibility to avoid it
2) simliar approach hasn't been used for 2,4 ghz spectrum which has less channels and more crowded

I wonder how many other hams are playing with WiFi ??
I am a radio ham (G0V..) and help in the UK.
The wireless issues are interesting. As are the licencing issues if you are a ham.
Good luck and have fun !

Ham since 1984 - been playing with RF for over 30 years
Playing with Packet radio since about 1985 both professionally
and as part of the Ham movement. worked with WLAN since about 95/96
and have been running star-os for about 2-3 years
Present call MW0CQU
I'd like...no...I'd LOVE to see Hams set up a national community WLAN around their countries using internet linked VPNs to span oceans etc to rival the packet radio system of the 1980-1990 period. WLAN is not just about internet
only!
However, as WLAN is in unlicenced spectrum why make it exclusive to
Hams ? no reason that (for example) internet gateway and repeater linking traffic could not be passed over a community WLAN. Repeater group sites would be a phenominal advantage to both Hams and community lanners
alike.
Any other UK based Hams interested ? - lets get cracking! weve started in south wales already.
We have open WLAN Nodes in :
Newport *
Magor (2 - possible 3rd soon)*
Bridgend
Pembroke (2)
and a tentative node on a high spot west of cardiff.
(*) were TRYING to get the star-os VPNs working properly - see my posts in the support forum
