Can anyone tell me if the INTEL Etherexpress PRO 10/100 ISA (PCLA8560) card is supported by Star OS.

In the FAQ (http://www.staros.com/faq.php#Q6) it says that there is support for the Etherexpress PRO 100 Cards (but doesn't say anything about the Pro 10/100 cards)

As you can guess by the question, I am trying to install a 100MB card in an ISA Slot and use it with Star OS, (I don't have any free PCI Slots, as they have all been used by Radios.)

I have already tried the only other 100MB ISA Card that I am aware of, the 3COM Fast Etherlink ISA 10/100 Base-TX 3C515-TX but I discoved that Star OS didn't pick it up.

Before I purchase the Intel card, I would like some advise.

Thanks
Keith

Hi Lonnie / Tony. I have some IBM P4 1.8 NetVista's that I'd like to put into StarOS service. They have a built in Ethernet, that StarOS recognizes and the System Report says are a Intel 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM controller with a MAC Prefix of 00:02:55. I don't see them match up with anything on the FAQ list, so could you tell me if they are supported and if they're good performers? Thanx.

These would be for existing building top locations where we currently have Desktop computers, so upgrading from some old Celeron's to these newer computers is more doable than a WAR/WRAP solution at the moment.

Thank you.

Sorry, but we do not test a lot of motherboards and ethernet cards. We are limited in terms of time to play and cash to buy.

I'm not sure what you mean by "doable" since I'm sure the WAR boards will be able to do your building top locations and provide better service than you are getting with a desktop system.

Sorry, but we do not test a lot of motherboards and ethernet cards. We are limited in terms of time to play and cash to buy.No problem. I was just wondering if there were any obvious known issues, like there are with those junk 3Com ones for example. The particular wording 'Intel 82801' wasn't in the FAQ list, so I thought you might happen to know one way or other, but not a problem at all - there are a bazzillion computers and ethernet combinations, so I totally understand.

I'm not sure what you mean by "doable" since I'm sure the WAR boards will be able to do your building top locations and provide better service than you are getting with a desktop system.Yes, going forward, the WAR's are certainly the way to go. We've got these four building tops with inside locations for our computers, and LMR out to antennas on Masts, so replacing computer for computer should be a simple upgrade we're hoping. Plus we do Caching on these AP's, so WAR's aren't a replacement at this point that way. Also, in general, I'm really not having much luck with replacing V2 AP's with V3 AP's and talking to our exsting client. We have to do some more experamentation before we do any more V3 live. :) All of our existing clients have RTS/CTS set, and many have fragmentation set, which worked great with V2, but it seems it is a no-go with V3.

In any case, not to bash WAR / V3 at all!! Going forward, that'll be all we do for sure. Just hoping to do a simple Celeron to P4 upgrade on a few desktop AP's in this case, and wondered if the Intel NIC was going to be a problem :) Thanx.

As a heads-up on the v3 side, the fragmentation issue you mentioned has been resolved, and will support these clients in the next release. Thank you for pointing this out.

Great! I look forward to that. We should be able to deploy then I think!

inet2000, you can be sure that any intel integrated on motherboard will have excellent performance (we see steady >98Mbps), maximum compatibility and no issues. This doesn't have to apply to absolutely newest chipsets due to driver constraints (intel made all-in-one driver, but OS you use might not be updated to the very latest level).

I doubt you will ever see any problems with 100mbit intel cards. My rant applies to Gigabit models only.
