Anyone recommend a decent (free ?!?) network monitoring tool. I want to be alerted when nodes go down etc.

Hi,
You will have to use Linux or other variant, but nPulse is the way to go. It is highly configurable.

Also, just for tracking uptimes, and stuff, I use smokeping, its by the same guy who wrote MRTG.
'apt-get install smokeping' (yes debian is "the best")

WhatsUP gold and SiteScope. SiteScope is cross platform since it is based on Java.

3Com Network Supervisor, it's free from 3Com (obviously) all they ask is you register online. It will discover your network for you and then monitor any device you select (you can select all if you wish, but that may generate a lot of traffic on a large network). It's Windoze software and creates a graphical map of your network.
