I am trying to get a Soekris with an orinoco gold to talk to an orinoco ap500. I can see the IP traffic going through the soekris with ip accounting, but I am not getting any traffic back

I am using 128 WEP is this supported ?

Are you sure you have your gateway set correctly? As a test, turn off WEP and make sure it works in the most simple possible way. Then introduce WEP in steps to make sure you have it right.

Thanks Lonnie

Good news and bad news, I turned WEP off on the AP-500 and the Soekris and communications worked first time, with everything routing perfectly.

When I turned WEP back on, I could no longer ping the AP or anything else.

A few comments that might be relevant :

I am using Orinoco Gold cards in the Soekris and the AP-500
The AP-500 only supports 128 WEP so I was unable to turn on WEP slowly

There is some communications going on because the ssh Soekris monitor is showing activity quality/signal/noise/link information. When one appliance has WEP on & the other does not this info does not show ?

continued from previous post

I am also seeing the same problem when the Soekris is running as the AP and the remote client is a win XP

It works fine with WEP off. With WEP 128 on I can see associations on the Soekris but no traffic will go through.

This feels like I am doing something dumb, could it be an Orinoco firmware version problem ? Is WEP 128 known to work ok with Orinoco golds and soekris ?

Important question: How are you setting the WEP keys on the non-staros devices?

The WEP Password phrase key generator that we include was designed for use with LinkSys clients (WMP11, WET11, etc). On other devices, you will have to find a way to input the exact same HEX key as you have on the StarOS box.

Thanks!

On the AP-500's I am using the AP Manager software. Entering the 13 character keys in ascii

For the Win XP clients I am using the Wireless Network Connections dialog and again entering the keys in ascii.

On Linux boxes I am entering the keys as s:key fields in the wireless.opts file again in ascii. When I do an iwconfig, I see the keys in hex and the hex contains the correct (ascii) values.

On the Soekris boards I am using the WEP option and also using ascii, I am NOT clicking the Linksys dialog button.

I think this is your problem. The "Pass Phrase" is linksys only, whether the WET11 box is checked or not.

You type in something in pass phrase, then hit "generate key", select one of the generated keys in hex, then type that same hex key into each device. Ignore the ascii value.

That's how I do it... Seems to work.

Success !!!

Yes, I did not realise I had to enter the WEP code in hex, and was using the key generator instead.

Thanks everyone for helping.

Glad everything is working!
