View Full Version : Test setup is running...
OK
i got signal -60 on 5 mile link with 108 mbps rates. The problem is when i do throughput tests from staros box i get ~81mbps speed but ftp data test cant get more than 45 mbits. Is there something wrong or just staros throughput test util is not accurate. ping times when loaded in both cases are around 10ms. give me a hint

FTP is not always the best way to test bandwidth. It wasn't designed to fill the pipe, so it tends not to. Also, ftp looses bandwidth to ack wait states, so when you push a file, you pause to see if the previous chunk was accepted before sending the next. A "properly" working TCP stack will back the speed of the protocol down if it detects congestion, so in theory TCP should never fill a pipe with only one stream.
Also, some ftp clients may not be able to run at full speed.

Also, the Atheros have builtin compression and your FTP might be doing non compressible data.
Shouldn't the 108mb be uncompressed throughput? But there are several other factors to consider: If it's g, there's a good chance of interference, A could have interference also, but not as likely. Also I've never seen 11MB of throughput on a 802.11b radio associated at 11mb/s. I know the atheros stuff tries to compress the data to get the throughput closer or even greater than the radio speed, but some data isn't compressable.

sorry guys, but I still think that having 45mbits single-stream throughput at 5 miles DEFINITELY is a wonder - considering the price you paid for the stuff... do you think you will see more with $6K grade hardware? Nope, babe.
congrats, h3ll !

Some more info today. The speeds i was seeing now dropped to 40mbits, still excellent. This is all done in turbo mode, when switching to non-turbo speed are twice lower, as i expected. ftp and http tests i made were from linux console with wget and ftp client 3 simultaneous sessions and of course the included in staros util. Usualy when line is oversaturated pings are around 10ms in turbo and 20-40 in non-turbo mode. The files i am transfering are zipped archives, because they are big, will be testing with text files and such to see if there is a difference.

I agree entirely and since you have more channels to use. I am ecstatic to get 10 mbps or more. We paid a lot of $$ for a Tsunami 8 mbps ethernet bridge and these things do better for way less $$. And we have more channels for the 2.4 GHz AP units since all my backhauls are on 5.x GHz.
