New: starutil addition to disconnect hotspot sessions based on username or IP
New: Hotspot addition to allow one to select PAP or CHAP-based authentication. (hotspot dialog)
New: MAC address ":" separator is now optional in hotspot authentication.
New: firewall 'forward' command update to support 'in via'.
Update: Atheros enhancements include the ability to adjust ACK timing, txpower and Country code.
Update: Atheros WORLD cards such as the Proxim 8482-WD are now supported.
Update: Atheros regulatory information has been updated to allow 5.8 range for EU countries such as Ireland.
Update: Secondary firmware for Prism 2.5 cards has been brought back to version 1.7.4 due to some cards having problems with v1.8.2
Update: Trial modes now have Atheros support.
Update: Frequency can now be used in place of channel number on the Atheros configuration dialog.
Update: Wireless frequency is shown on the UI desktop instead of channel.
Update: Atheros station statistics are now accurate (rx and tx values), as well as the reporting of the client IP address.
Update: Radius Fallback CBQ attributes are now operational, and supported in pptp, pppoe and Hotspot logins.
Update: WRAP Editions now have a serial console at 38400bps to match the default BIOS setting. (used to be 9600bps)
Update: User interface update to show '*' values for signal readings that have not been updated, or are not supported by the card being used.
Update: Radius web interface update. Now supports DNS, and CBQ fallback attributes in addition to a few new enhancements.
Fixed: DHCP client no longer loses it's lease when a system first boots up, or the system changes are activated.
Fixed: Atheros 802.11a stations can now properly associate to APs using channels 40, 48, 56, 153 and 161. Previously they would associate then immediately re-scan for a new AP.
Fixed: Fixed TX rate on Atheros cards can be set once again. (used to lock at lowest rate possible regardless of the rate specified)
Fixed: ESSID lengths > 19 no longer cause the system to hand on bootup (thanks to all who helped track this down). This problem only exists while using Prism-based cards.
Fixed: Atheros Inter-BSS relay has been improved, and solves a problem which can result in a system hang if one associated clients tries to access another, who is no longer available.
Fixed: 100% CPU usage, and resulting inability to log into a hotspot page has been addressed. We have been unable to duplicate this situation as described by a small number of users, however this update may help.

Hey Tony,
as you write about the 19 ESSID string.. i have exact 19 legth, so could it be problem that i have so i cant upgrade from 1.12.6 to 1.13.2. And today i tried it again, but the same reason.. I installed 1.13.2 from CD and then put the key and the change essid to my provider.
the name has 19 characters... could it be the problem ?

It frozen after activated this settings and when I restart the system networking section stopped without error message.

The problem has been solved quite some time ago. Just as a test however, try shortening your ESSID before upgrading.

Hi guys

Thanks for the "in via" option of the forward command in the firewall rules.

I'm having a little problem with the watchdog, when it can't get a successfull ping, it does initiate the reboot process but it hangs there.

When looking at the console, it was written Rebooting... and was stuck there. It was working correctly with the beta (I don't remember which version...).

Hi Tony

I'm running on a Radisys PW 810 specs here http://www.radisys.com/oem_products/ds-page.cfm?productdatasheetsid=1028

Chipset Intel 810, Celeron 400, Dual Intel Nic 10/100, Atheros (D-Link AG-520, )Star-Os on CF to IDE adaptor.

I was working previously on the same haredware.

Thank you, we will see about tracking down a test system with this specific chipset for testing. Which Edition do you have installed? (file name of original download will do).

Does anybody else have similar problems? If so, can you list your motherboard manufactuer, name, and rev. number, chipset (ie, 810, SiS, etc.), RAM type (DDR or SDRAM), CPU brand and finally, types of PCI cards in your system.

Thanks!

Hi Tony

I used this file: strr-1.13.3-3993.bin (Router edition)

I was made to believe that strong encryption would be included in this build. I am really anxious to use my firewall in addition to at least one other to provide a secure border gateway between our office in the UK and in Seattle. In order to do this I feel that I need IKE or Blowfish.

Is there a revised timetable for providing these essential encryption options?

We will be aiming for ipsec support in the v2.xx releases which are currently in development.

maybe, I have still 1.12.6, because other version had problems. The 13.13.2. too, but i cut the essid to 17 and it's good. I had 20 before.

I upgraded all our towers early sunday morning to 1.13.3 (except for 1 I don't want to drive to incase something went bad during the reboot), and all rebooted fine except for our via 733 atheros AP server (ag520). I drove to our office and plugged in a monitor and keyboard, but nothing but a black screen. I powercycled it and it came back to life. I just assumed 1 out of ~9 towers going bad during a reboot is expected :)

Anyways I really like the new look of the main page how it tells the SSID, and also the * for unsupported signals in the association list.

I just left the hill and havn't peaked the NOC end of this link but everything else is set up and I can see the other end on the hill.

Cards are DWL AG520's both ends.
ASUS 680E MOBOs with Celeron 850 CPU.
64 m RAM.

AP side : Client side:
BSS auto BSS auto
Trans Rate auto Trans Rate auto / or manual with no change
ACK 8000 ACK 8000
Country Code US Country Code US
Power 20 Power 20
AP Client
Auto / Mode 802.11a Mode 802.11a / or forced 802.11a

Name MAC IP Qual Signal Noise Rate Idle Time
[TEST-1 Client] 99:46:f3 - 0.0 6/11 -89/ -84 */* 12 1s

I know the sig level will come up when get the dish on the AP end aimed.

Antennas PAC 29db both ends.
30 ft LMR 600 on the Client side
4 Ft LMR 400 on the AP side.
Times EZ connectors 4 places.
-------------------------------------------

Here is the question ?
Why is the freq selecting 5250 Ghz.
I would have thought it would have locked into 5240 or 5260.
This doesn't change with either auto mode or if I set both ends to manual selection of 802.11a

Even when things seem to lock I can't ping from one end to the other.
I am going down to the NOC end and try for an alignment after supper.
I just pointed it out the window when I set it up.

What distance are you shooting? Are you using the 5.3 or 5.8 pacwireless dish?
Bob C

The shot is 11.6 miles...
Total LOS....960 ft AMSL on the hill and 8th floor of downtown plus 30Ft AMSL.
---------------------------
The feeds are 5.8 I am pretty sure.
(There was / is a lot I didn't know when I ordered antennas for this project.)

The TV station has 4 Tsunami radios on 6.2 and 6.8 Ghz Full duplex.
They have them "Piped" into a 6+ Ghz remote site dish ( a 8 footer).
It is a 25 mile hop with a 45.6 db fade margin.
I don't seem to be effecting them or they me.
Most likely because their BW is +-3 deg
I don't want to interfear with them as they own the site.

You should set the AP in the 5.8ghz range, not 5.2ghz... if you indeed have the 5.8ghz pacwireless dish, it isn't rated to send/receive at 5.2ghz. Also, you'd be way over the FCC limit if you are transmitting in the 5.2ghz range.
Good luck, maybe if you are indeed transmitting at 5.2ghz that would explain why you have a marginal signal and can't transmit data. Pacwireless sells seperate 5.2ghz AND 5.8ghz dishes.

Well I guess I had better do a little more checking.
The last I heard it was recommended to set the freq selector to auto..
So what happens then???Hummm.
I am sure that if the antenna is cut for 5.8 and it is operating at 5.2
there will be a ton of loss.

The way the freq reading bounces around when it is working with a weak signal it is hard to tell just what it is doing.
It finally locks when it has enough signal and things start to work again.
I think what is fooling me a bit is that if the signal goes away it continues to display the last reading.
When you are trying to peak on a signal like that you really need a real time display like we have with the 11b stuff.

I just got back from the downtown location and managed to get 22/22 as the best I can get.
I was testing with 5240 because it set itself at 5250 in auto mode.
At least it is on the air.
Now I can go from there.
It's a start. and I got it to pass 22meg. funny it was only reading 6 on the AP side.
Oh well back to the books....Thanks for the input.

Setting to auto has the effect that it will park on the first clear channel. Set this like you would anything, in that you decide the AP channel. The Client will follow and look for the ESSID.

I have a brand new cpu here (asus p4800s) with 128mb ram and brand new HD.
I made a .iso and have reflashed the HD twice.
The problem is that it hangs when it is 'checking for atheros...'
I've enabled/disabled everything i can think of in the bios.
Any ideas?
I don't have any other versions of starOS to make a .iso out of, I just cleaned up my HD the other day and got rid of a bunch of old starOS... and the website doesn't have anything anymore but 1.13.3 router iso.
I pulled everything out of the PCI slots, so the only thing in there is the AGP card.

What sort of Atheros radio are you using?

bobbyc
04-19-2004, 12:06 AM
Oops, I misexplained. It hangs AFTER the 'checking for atheros'... so it hangs whether I have a card in there or not.
But i'm using a ag520... but again, it hangs whether there is a atheros card in there or not.
Right now it has been stuck there for about a half hour and there is nothing in the pci slots at all, just a AGP video card in the AGP slot.

Have you done all the usual configs? Disable USB, 2nd serial, audio, game port, midi, floppy? And make sure the VGA does not get an IRQ. Do you have a supported Ethernet device? The system is sort of undetermined with no Ethernet.

bobbyc
04-19-2004, 12:23 AM
Yup on all of those. It has onboard lan, and it's enabled. This is the first MB besides the via boards you sold that we've tried using that has onboard lan. I'm hoping that's not it.
Anyways, I'm gonna burn a new .iso tomorrow incase it's a bad burn, and look to see if there's any bios updates.
Night and thanks,
Bob C

What are the Ethernet chips on the board?

bobbyc
04-19-2004, 01:01 AM
Realtek RTL8100C chip.
Well this topic will have to be put on hold; the MB just fried and I can't pinpoint what fried... but maybe it had problems from the get go.
