I'm trying to install StarOS on a desktop computer, for purposes of "playing with it", but am having some difficulties.
For one, after downloading the ISO's and burning them onto CD, the machine boots from the cd, and I get to the "loading installer, please wait" point and it just stops.
If I hit enter, the machine reboots. Otherwise, it will sit forever.
Does the boot not recognize dual controllers?
(CD and hard drive are on pri and sec controllers)

This is strange. I would suspect that the CD that you burnt might be a little faulty.
If a second CD does the same thing, please let us know.
Thanks!

Actually, I've downloaded both the server and cpe editions of the latest RC (couple days old) and burned them on separate cd's and both do precisely the same thing.
You suppose it's a hardware setting?
This is a rather generic machine... P3 667, 1 old 545 meg hd, 52x LG cd, everything autodetect...
Come to think of it, I've not burned a cd from an .iso before, either.
after downloading, I ended up with a file name like this: cpeblahblah.iso...iso
I removed the added stuff (thanks IE).
UPDATE
I just noticed that the .iso files appear to have an odd size...
cpe 6918kb
router 10,666 kb.
Is this correct? I swear it said the sizes were different when I downloaded...

Better grab them again, as they are bit short. I just did the current cpe and it was 8.84 MB as per download window.

9,312KB
CPE (SBC) ISO:

I would suspect your downloads may be incomplete perhaps. If they are not, is it possible to try and boot the CD from a different PC to void out hardware issues.
We use systems similar to this for testing, complete with LG 52x CD-Roms.
Thanks!

New ISO image, and it boots and runs.
What pci ethernet cards are recognized by the server edition? I don't recall offhand what's in the box, but it isn't recognized.
The CPE edition uses the RTL8139 based ethernet cards, and the Server and Router editions can use most of the common ones (ie. RTL, Intel, 3Com, DEC, etc).
The cards we would recommend are any RTL8139C-Based card as they have the most mature driver support due to their popularity.
Thanks!
I've encountered a strange problem. I just installed my new 32MB DOM with the latest StarOS on it... it hangs at the point where the OS tells me it's booting.
I've run the machine successfully with the demo version burned from ISO to a small HD connected to the machine. I have tested both master and slave mode, no success. I've also tried using IDE full auto-detect mode, and the BIOS mode HD detection. No change either way.
The only time I've been able to hang a boot before was with a code version that wasn't fully downloaded, which I burned to CD. Also, I've managed to hang it with only a CD-ROM connected, without another writable IDE device connected to write the software to.
Does someone have any more recommendations for me?
What brand is your DOM? Have you tried re-installing the OS on it via CD, like you did your your HDD?
Thanks

It's a PQI, bought from your company a few days ago. My machine doesn't have a second IDE bus, which makes it rather difficult to connect a CD-ROM to do a reinstall.
When the OS attempts to boot, I see request activity on the HD LED, and then it hangs up and stays on solid, at which point the machine doesn't respond to the three finger salute either.
That is very interesting. Is it possible that your machine does not like DOMs? We pre-install, and test all DOMs that leave here.
Is it possible to try in a different PC, just to see if it boots? I'll be happy to help troubleshoot this into the evening if it's convenient with you.
Thanks!
After testing in another PC, I managed to get the DOM to boot... now the question becomes why the demo router version ran fine, but the DOM doesn't.
I'm using the following machine:
http://www.rise.com.tw/rs588.htm
It has the R588 motherboard in it made by the same company. Does it like to have two devices on the IDE chain for some reason? The problem is I can't test that theory since I have only one hardware IDE bus... the BIOS indicates two, but they didn't wire up the second.

How much RAM do you have in your machine, and are you powering up the DOM using the 'Master' labled power connector?

With things like that it is usually the sector translation of the hard drive. The DOM in question was made on one of our machines and if your BIOS translates the same way, it is off and running.
One way to make sure, is to create a bootable CDROM and write the DOM on the computer it will be running on. One thing that you can depend on is that the translation is a non issue if you are running on the machine that made the copy.
I've tried both master and slave, and I have 96MB of RAM installed in the machine.
The problem here is that I only have one IDE connector... I can't connect a CD-ROM to this machine since the DOM takes up the slot with it's connector. I can't cable in anything extra.
Do you have a recommended translation I can use in my BIOS? I'll hard-code the settings for the DOM if need be.

Can you try and have the BIOS settings changed to LBA, then LARGE if that does not work. Typically the DOM translation is automatic but the BIOS might be a wee bit non-standard.
When it boots, does it detect the DOM, and any chance you are quick enough to write down the message (the new machines flash those messages so quickly). :)
I've tried all the settings. It auto-detects it as large, which I tried. The settings are CHS, LBA, and LARGE.
When booting, what is the last message on the screen before it quits?
It tells me the OS is loaded, and is booting. That's when it hangs up.

When you are in the BIOS, is there an option to enable or disable the Secondary IDE controler? I know there are no headers for it on the motherboard, but the hardware may be there. Can you try and disable it and see if it improves things.
Feel free to email me (tony@valemount.com).
