Does StarOS support/allow for Wep Plus with the Orinoco cards? If so, anything special need to be done? Thanks alot.

I thought WEP plus was all in the card? As long as two Orinoco's with the latest firmware were talking to each other, WEP plus was used.

WEP plus is taken care of via the firmware, and supported given your cards are using a newer firmware revision. (>= 8.10)

We will check it out. I also thought that all it required was two compatible cards and they used the more secure method. As usual it might be dangerous to assume.

I wonder if there is a way to force wep plus *only* connections.
That way if a customer downgrades their card, for example, the less secure connection is not allowed. I'm sure the short answer is no... but just where does security stand?
Of course we have secure tunnels (pptp, ipsec) but they add to the overall cost of deployment, as well as support overhead, since there is not direct support for PPTP/IPsec inside StarOS.
Is WEP plus the only supported answer at this point? What about firmware availability? Is the same firmware good for all "Orinoco type" cards, such as buffalo?
George
WEP Plus's function is to change the way the Initialization Vector is determined in a WEP encrypted packet, and is fully firmware driven with no special driver or software requirements. The latest 8.10+ firmware should contain this enhancement, and should work with your card if there is an upgrade for it.
This WEP mode is not a new encryption method, and is compatible with other WEP implementations. There is no way to force both sides to require WEP Plus.
Thanks!
