View Full Version : Only 1 of 2 pcmcia>pci working

I've got 2 single pcmcia>pci adapters:
1 Orinoco TI chip based,
1 Buffalo Ricoh chip based.
When I want to use them both, Star-OS does detect both cards but failes on 1 of them
(at boot time I get 3 high tones first and 1 low tone a couple of seconds later).
If I use only 1 it all works fine, but not in combination.
When I put in the second card it always failes to initialize. :(
Any idea what the problem might be ?
Both cards have a unique IRQ and are detected by the systems bios.
Which version are you running?
It would seem as though one of the cards are failing hence the low tone, however we'll need to get a log snippet to see the cause.
Can you copy'n paste the pcmcia detection from the kernel log? and send it in a message? This should provide the information we need to help troubleshoot.
The kernel log can be found under "advanced->kernel message log (dmesg)"
To copy the text to your windows clipboard, hold the shift key while click and highlight the relevant screen portions, and it'll automatically copy it for you. You can then paste it in a message to us.
Thanks!

I'm running v1.13.2 build 3790 router.
Have been testing some more and found out that it sometimes hangs on boot / second card insertion.
Have not been able to find out which combination of cards does this.
Ik will mail the log but cannot do that for another day or so, I'm having major trouble reaching the unit. Probably a badly connected rj45.

Seems to be the Realtek chip causing some trouble,
I can only get ethernet traffic at 10 mbps half-duplex
and the card set to auto-detect.
Even then the traffic is bad, only about 20% gets through.
Changed out the cable and the switch but no luck. :|
Is anyone else having trouble with Realtek (8139c) chips ?

We pretty much use nothing but Realtek 8139 cards. That does not mean there could not be a problem, and it is certainly possible that it does not like your motherboard. Have you tried to change the slots you have everything plugged into?

I have tried changing the realtek to any slot, even removed all other cards (but vga) and still the same. Exchanged it with an intel pro100+ and
it runs as it hasn't done before, no problems at all.
Well... the two pcmcia>pci adapters still do not like eachother.
And I now only have about 23 hours left :-(
Think I'll have to add the realtek as a dumb card for the time being.

Have you tried another Realtek? Maybe you just have a bad one.

The only other Realteks I have are gigabit 8169-chip based.
Haven't tested that one.

I exchanged the 8139c with another card
(not the same but it has the same chip) and that one works just fine. Looks like a bad card indeed.
Will remove all the realteks and leave the intel.
Can I exchange my key to support my intel card ?
After that I can retry adding the second pcmcia>pci adapter.
(only have 4 pci-slots available in the machine)

Are you having problems with the TI 1410 or the Ricoh RL5C475 adapter?
If you remove the TI 1410, does the Ricoh work as expected?

Either card works perfect if it is the only one with a card inserted.
It goes wrong when adding the second pcmcia.
Currently I have a Orinoco Hermes in the Orinoco TI chip based card
and a Prism 2.0 based card in the Buffalo Ricoh chip based one.
I booted with only the hermes and inserted the prism later.
After that I rebooted the system again and it always starts the card in the TI based slot first and the one in the Ricoh then fails.
Do you need more of the log-files ?
