I am considering purchasing some Senao 200mW cards ( http://www.vbnets.com/products/page.php?id=81 ) for a long distance link, which is ~40 miles.
The minimum actual throughput I would like to be able to get is 1mbps. Assuming clear line of sight, can this be done or not? Again the distance is ~40 miles, and the card would be used together with a high gain (24dBi) antenna).

Probably not, you cannot adjust the link distance with the seano cards. An Orinoco is more than adaquate for 40 miles, and the atheros cards should be too for 2.4 or 5ghz once the link distance adjustment is added. :)
That is correct. The Prism cards will link at that distance, however the throughput will be around 16KBytes/sec w/ heavy packet loss. The ORiNOCO cards (with adequate antenna and AMP) can be used for this purpose.
The Atheros distance tweaking is being worked on though will take a little while to complete.

Hey Brendan! :D
I was trying to avoid using an amp, and connect the card directly to a 24dbi aerial using a short, low-loss pigtail. Tony, if I may ask, do you know whether there are any Atheros-based cards available yet with -105 receive sensitivity, and if not do you know if there will be soon? Trying to do everything possible not to go over the power limits here in Ireland by too much, while still maintaining a workable link until additional "hops" can be built.
