All of the atheros based cards I see only have 1 external antenna connector. I haven't bought any, this is just from looking at online pics. Is this the case or do they have separate connectors for 2.4 and 5.x Or do they only operate on 1 band at a time?

The Mikrotik ones have 2 connectors, for diversity, but you only connect your pigtail to the main one. The fament ones have 4 connectors, 2 for each band, a main and auxilary connector (http://www.fament.com/catalog/images/SL-5354MP.gif) - for diversity, again only connect antenna to the primary port. They both only work on one band at a time.
