View Full Version : StarOS v1.13.2b5-3677 ready for testing
Changes between v1.13.2b4 and v1.13.2b5:
Fixed: Hotspot rates as specified in Radius are now consistent with those used by pppoe and pptp. Eg: 128Kbps rate is now entered as 128000 and not 16000.
Fixed: wpci interfaces are now shown properly under the menus.
Update: Proxy, DNS and Radius server menu and desktop items are now only shown on Server Editions.
Any and all comments are welcome.

DNS issues.
Some site load quick, others either blank page or extremely slow.
Using Star DNS 127.0.0.1, so users go to root servers.

A DNS issue would be strictly a no response. If it loads slowly or to a blank page then DNS has done its job and you have LAN issues. Given what is happening lately go looking for Welchia and other ping flood worms.

I have all the firewall rules inplace for the Welchia/Blaster worm from the forums. They work great. I identified two customers and their now clean.
No Worm traffic.
Maybe it's the Verisign crap. They were ordered to shutdown their SiteFinder service "Yea". .com and .net domain names.

I haven't seen any complaints about this latest beta... last night I was reviewing signals on all our hilltops and found a couple hilltops with strr 1.12.2 and I remember Lonnie mentioning that there were processor problems with that version. Should I risk the latest beta on those couple hilltops, or play it safe and upload 1.12.3? We are only using basic AP functions/routing at this time, nothing fancy like hotspot, radius, etc...
Thanks,
Bob C
When will the next stable be released?
edit: I sound like a baby; I'll load 1.12.3 and play it safe... they're pretty busy hilltops.

I think 1.12.6 was a very stable release. Typically I would not put a beta at any site until I had run it somewhere that was easy to get at. If you have an easy to get to system, then by all means put it there and if it gives you no grief for a few days then you could consider it safe to put somewhere that was harder to readch.
1.12.2 should be upgraded, and any of the betas should be better. Go with 1.12.6, as it has all the troubleshooting and tracking tools.

I upgraded my home router to this latest beta... to try out the pptp client. Do I have to do anything else besides INTERFACES-PPTP CLIENT SETUP?
I did the pptp configuration and enable pptp client... but can't surf the net on my XP machine that is connected via crossover cable to the NIC in the starOS. If I use the built in XP pptp client it works great. The only route on the starOS is the 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x route to the AP 8 miles from home. The PPTP server is poptop/freeBSD.
Thanks,
Bob C
Yes, that is all that is needed. Can you verify that you are receiving a lease?

It just says 'there is no lease at this time'
For more testing, I can either:
*downgrade to an earlier beta tonight
*enable a PPTP server on the AP at the hilltop this machine is associating to (both are this latest beta) and see if it associates to that.
Our Poptop server is mschap V2 and I tried none, 40 bit, and 128 bit encryption on my starOS box. If I do this, how do I setup a username/password on the server?
Bob C
Probably the best troubleshooting tactic would be to watch your poptop server while you try and connect, and see why it is failing. The username and password on the StarOS pptp client dialog are in plain-text, and usable for both encrypted and non-encrypted sessions.
Make sure you are using the latest release (v1.13.2b5) as it works quite well with pptp.
Thanks!

We (sys adm) and I looked at the poptop server and didn't see much; does the pptp client accept the IP the server assigns it, or does it try to use a certain IP?
Bob C
It uses the IP provided by the pptp server.
Thanks!

hmmmm. It isn't receiving a userid, so it is failing very early. Possibly
because it refuses the IP.
You don't have a freeBSD poptop server readily available, do you?
It might make sense for me to enable PPTP server on the starOS AP that my starOS infrastructure is associated to... but I can't imagine anything I'm overlooking. I just need guidance in setting up a username/passwd on that AP unit.
This isn't important, I'm just playing around with the PPTP client. My hope is to begin using it extensively at some hilltops where the person living there gets free internet over the ethernet port; but the feature doesn't exist yet to only allow the PPTP client over the ethernet port only and not the AP cards.
I've been trying to get the sys adm to switch the poptop/freebsd server out for a starOS machine for a while now, but he's hesitant because of the usage tracking he has setup on that machine (we have a metered WISP system)
Bob C
We use poptop, however we've not played with it on FreeBSD.
If you are using MPPE, make sure it's enabled in the client. If you do not have it enabled, and you server uses it, it will not connect.
Thanks!

Yeah we've tried that... we're 128 bit.
We'll revisit it soon... we're looking at switching over to a netgraph PPTP server as soon as 5.2-release is out.

Is netgraph better under 5.2 than it was under 4.7?
I built a netgraph based pptp server and was unimpressed with the poor performance. Hopefully things are better now.

We haven't played with it yet, just looked at the config files. With mpd-netgraph all the heavy processing takes place in the kernel which 'should' make things more efficient. I believe poptop takes place in userland.

Yeah, that's the claim...
What my experience told me was that this was a theoretical claim on the part of the netgraph programmers that was probably true only when compared to the code it was replacing.
I don't remember why I didn't like poptop under freebsd... that may have been a performance issue too, I don't recall.

Tony I'd like to revisit this PPTP problem again. I have 1 starOS client I'd like to get PPTP working on, and 2 freeBSD clients I'd like to switch over to starOS. If we gave you access to log into our freeBSD Poptop server, could you navigate BSD and look at the server log while you SSH from there into a starOS box and enable PPTP client?

We have another deadline and cannot help with that sort of login support until next week. Is that soon enough? Maybe Wednesday?

Lonnie, Tony emailed me (i emailed him as well as posted here) and he suggested to first try 1.13.1 since 1.13.2 has a pptp problem that will get corrected soon.
I'll try that first, this is not super important.
Thanks,
Bob C

Downgrading to 1.13.1 worked beautifully; I got my pptp lease!
Thanks, this means I can swapout our freeBSD clients for starOS. freeBSD hermes driver can not lock association rate to 11, even though the option is there. This has been slowing down a couple of our APs and for a while there I was thinking the only solution would be to pull the wireless card out and use a WET11.
