Once upon a time, star-os had a neat feature called StarLink. This enabled long distance shots with great throughput - but required specific cards.
Now we have WDS, and I read it's compatible with most cards, including Prism based.
Does this mean we can now use prism cards for long distance shots?
Thanks...
While Prism 2.5 cards support WDS, only ORiNOCO cards can be used long distance shots in this mode.
Thanks!
Technically how ORiNOCO cards in WDS can do "long distance shots" while other Prism2 cards cannot?
It's not WDS that allows for the long distance shots as any ORiNOCO operating mode works equally well with this. Previously, only the operating mode called StarLink PtP supported the long-range mode with ORiNOCO cards. This mode has since been removed (as it is no longer needed), and replaced with it's successor, WDS. WDS in general does not provide long-range support, but WDS coupled with a distance-adjusted ORiNOCO card can accomplish the same results as the previous StarLink mode.
Unfortunately, the Prism 2/2.5 cards have no support for adjusting the link ranges like the ORiNOCOs.
Hope that helps.
Thanks!
Does distance tuning for ORiNOCO cards actually means setting the RTS?

No. And before you ask what we did, I have to say we are under NDA and cannot say any more. Suffice to say it works.
I have 200mW PRISM cards at both ends but the SNR is very low. So, I was wondering is this ORiNOCO distance tuning feature actually improving the signal or the throughput?
If it can give better signal then certainly I'll replace those 200mW PRISM cards with ORiNOCO.

The Orinoco would have even less signal. They increase the throughput beyond 12 miles if the signal level is high enough. What is the distance you are trying to go and what antennas fo you have on each end?
