Will the CBQ on star-os manage the bandwidth of multiple subnets even if they are not directly connected to that star-os box? Eg. I want to manage all of the bandwidth on my network from my central star-os box. Lets say my staros is 192.168.1.1/24 and I have 192.168.2.0/24 and 192.168.3.0/24 connected to it through other star-os boxes. Will I only be able to control bandwidth on the 192.168.1.0 subnet, or will I be able to control it on the others as well.

like
qshape 100 bw 1500k 768k 192.168.1.200 on $client
would limit the entire network on the staros box at 192.168.1.200 which is the gateway for 192.168.2.0 to 1500/768
But also

qshape 101 bw 768k 256k 192.168.2.5 on $client
would limit the bw of 192.168.2.5 through the gateway at 192.168.1.200 even though it is on a seperate subnet, without limiting the other users on that subnet.

Will it work that way?

Yep, you can shape any traffic going through the machine regardless of subnet.

Thanks!

what type of machine would I need for my central staros box? do I need ram, or hd space, or processor power, or all the above. Also how much of a benefit do you think the squid is? It seems like a lot of trouble to me, when generally web browsing is not the bandwidth hog.

The Squid proxy on our network is saving us approximately 25% in outgoing traffic. I would think that would be advantage enough.

Would only having CBQ on a central router cause a network bottleneck if you have multiple segments? IE you have a main station with your internet feed, which cannects to multiple point ot point links which provide service in different areas. If you have 1 - 3 hops between the customer and your main StarOS would that cause a bottle neck?
