View Full Version : What PLX adapters do you use?

I had a emergency swapout of a router at a hilltop because the CPU overheated. I ended up using (1) of the 2-slot ricoh pci adapters that Valemount sells, 1 PLX card from netgear and 1 PLX card from SMC. The router would lockup every 1/2 to 1 hour. The ping watchdog was activated but that function seemed to lock up as well. So after heading up there 3 times, I took out the PLX cards and put in orinoco (TI) pci adapter cards (we've had our troubles in the past with those too.) I would have used all ricoh but I only had the 1.
The router has been stable for 1.5 days now. When it would lock up I could not ping the tower from the APs or backhaul radios, but you could still associate to the radio/APs.

I haven't tested out each PLX to find out if it was the SMC or netgear that was the trouble, or if it was using the PLX adapter cards alongside the RICOH.
I have 2 other towers using Belkin PLX adapters; 1 cpu with 2 Belkin PLX, and another cpu with 1 Belkin PLX and 1 orinoco (TI) adapter. They are both working great. Never had a problem yet.
I should test out the netgear and smc PLX adapters some more to find out if one is worse than the others. Just thought I'd check in to see if anyone else as seen problems.

As a note with PLX adapters, they are very 'simple' devices and do not offer support for advanced features such as PCI IRQ sharing, etc. If your PLX adapter is sharing an IRQ with another device (whether it be PCI or ISA) the system will run into problems, which will result in cards quitting, and eventual system lockups.

Thanks!
